An incorrect pump installation can lead to cavitation (a detrimental and unstable working point). To help users avoid it, pump manufacturers provide the NPSH_r values at various working points. NPSH_r is the pressure at the inlet of the pump required to avoid cavitation. The system provides a certain amount of pressure at the inlet, called NPSH_a, which can be compared against NPSH_r to determine the cavitation risk.
